Navigating Acoustic Intricacy for Hong Kong’s Legal Sector
Achieving the perfect balance between open-plan transparency and the absolute acoustic privacy essential for legal counsel remains the ultimate challenge in commercial interior architecture. For a prominent global law firm in Hong Kong, the objective was to facilitate a space worthy of high collaboration traffic while ensuring that sensitive discussions stay confidential. JEB’s high-performing and lab-tested acoustic partitions are designed for all project sizes, providing the modular flexibility necessary to meet these precise performance requirements without compromising the design intent.

The Challenge: Navigating the Flexible Office Layout
Modern law firms are moving away from cellular, traditional layouts toward flexible, multi-purpose environments. However, architectural friction lies in the fundamental need for natural light, often achieved through extensive glass usage, and with mandatory STC (Sound Transmission Class) ratings that are required for boardrooms and partner offices, relying on standard glazing solutions often fails to mitigate flanking noise paths, particularly in high-density office environments where mechanical systems and HVAC noise can infiltrate private meeting spaces.
Key Technical Challenges:
- Acoustic Leakage: Ensuring floor-to-ceiling seals prevent sound transmission at the head, base, and junction profiles.
- Dynamic Space Utilization: Creating partitions that can pivot from private consultation rooms to larger conference suites seamlessly.
- Aesthetic Integration: Maintaining uniform, aesthetic visuals across both fixed partitions and movable elements within a high-end corporate fit-out.

The Solution: A System-Oriented Strategy
For this project, JEB implemented an integrated system strategy rather than relying on autonomous products. By promoting our X-Series double-glazed partitions as the foundational backbone, we achieved high STC ratings essential for the firm’s private offices. To address the need for floorplan reconfiguration, we integrated Integra operable walls, which allow the firm to expand or contract meeting rooms based on day-to-day needs. The visual transition between these zones was maintained via our Summit sliding doors, finished in a bespoke black frame to anchor the design palette.
Project Highlights:
- System Synergy: Use of X-Series double glazing ensures high-performance thermal and acoustic insulation throughout the floor plate.
- Operational Versatility: The Integra operable wall system provides a high-STC rating while remaining easy to deploy for daily team pivots.
- Refined Detailing: The black frame finish provides a sophisticated, high-contrast aesthetic that aligns with the premium branding of a global legal institution.
Acoustic Specification & Spatial Performance
Every component specified for this Hong Kong legal workplace serves a deliberate functional purpose; delivering high sound-transmission loss without sacrificing the visual collaboration of the team.
| Architectural Component | Specification Detail | Operational Benefit |
| Acoustic Partition | X-Series Double Glazing Partitions | Premium sound isolation for confidential conversations. |
| Movable Partition | Integra Operable Wall | On-demand adaptive space from private consultation rooms to larger conference suites. |
| Movable Door | Summit Sliding Doors | High-frequency accessibility in intensive boardroom environments without audible friction. It provides acoustic yet doesn’t take up floor space – good for small rooms |
JEB’s Design Takeaway
Successful legal workplaces around the world are built on flexibility. By engineering acoustic solutions that move and adapt, sensitive corporate environments can actively support both complete confidentiality and large-scale collaboration within the same environment.
